It is easier to control the depth, less risk of overdosing, less irritation to tissue and less likely to cause organ injury.
In many cases Isoflurane could be considered the most suitable anaesthetic for mice and rats. Is has also been shown that hepatic biodegradation of Isoflurane is less than 0,2% (Holaday and Smith, 1981) of the administered dose (compare Halothane 20%, Methoxyflurane 50%).
The low rate of biodegradation of inhalant anaesthetics decreases the potential for renal and hepatic injury in anaesthetized animals as well as in personnel exposed.
